My buddy Andrew really liked this photo, so I decided to post it as my newest self portrait. Perhaps one of these days I’ll start participating in the Self Portrait Challenge again. Flat Coke always enjoyed those posts. Maybe I can convince her to participate as well!

Bits and Pieces

I can finally breathe a sign of relief. I finished my last final exam yesterday. Semester grades have been posted in some classes, but not others. I made an A in Social Statistics, a B in Latin America, and a B in HR Management. I don’t have my grade for Corporate Etiquette yet, but I expect to get an A. Not bad considering that I work a full-time job.

I’ll be spending this weekend with Brico. I plan to finish my Christmas shopping while he is at work tomorrow. Os, you’re on call in case I get lost.

The plumber showed up on Monday and fixed the broken pipe. Hot water has never felt so good as it did that day! I have a leak under the bathroom sink, so the plumber will be coming over at 5:00 today to fix that. Afterwards, I’ll get on the road to the Carolinas.

I got a lot of compliments on my SPC/HNT photo, both on here and on MySpace. Thanks to you all!

It’s Self Portrait Challenge time again! I’m late this week, but better late than never!

This photo was taken on April 15, 2006. This is me with my brother Jake on his wedding day.

Out of my three siblings, Jake is the only one I’m close to. It’s funny – we were never close while growing up. Part of that was because of the age difference – he’s eight years younger than me. After I moved out of my parents’ house at age 20, Jake and I barely even talked. At age 27, I got divorced and moved out on my own. I lived by myself for a year, and then I bought a house. I had recently gone back to college, and Jake was getting ready to start college. I called him up one day while moving into the new house, and I asked him if he’d like to move in with me. Considering that he was living my parents at the time, and this would be his first taste of freedom, he said yes. Oh wait – he said hell yes!

Jake lived with me for the next three years. I worked during the day; he worked at night. We both went to school. We watched movies together, we ate dinner together, and we became the best of friends. It was amazing for me to discover all the things we had in common – things I had never before been aware of. It was a terrific three years.

Jake moved out on his own in 2003. He moved two hours away to take a management job in Kingsport. You cannot imagine the loneliness I felt when he was gone. We remained great friends, and he ended up moving back to Knoxville a few months later. He moved to an apartment only a few minutes from me. He lives there still, but now he’s married and has a young baby. Our relationship isn’t as strong as it once was. Family and work responsibilities make it difficult for him to hang out with me. I know that I shouldn’t be upset about that, but I am. I think back to the good old days – watching movies together, discussing our dates with each other – and I am sad. At the same time, I am thankful for the three years we spent becoming not only brother and sister, but also friends.

The Weekend Blues

This has been a sad and emotionally challenging weekend for me – one of those times where you realize just how lonely you really are. Fortunately, I am a very optimistic person, and it’s not often that I go through these “funks”.

I met Barry and his wife Laura for lunch on Friday. We ate at the Mellow Mushroom, and my vegetarian hoagie was just awesome! We took some photos for use on the Self Portrait Challenge.

On Friday night, I went to see Born Yesterday at the Clarence Brown Theatre. Once again, I was dateless. Everywhere I looked, there were happy couples. Being in the midst of my funk already, it was difficult to watch. On a brighter note, the play turned out to be pretty good, but not one of the best I’ve seen.

This morning I got up early and got my car to the dealership for service. I got an oil change, and a tire rotation and balance. Afterwards, I decided to take Kevin’s advice and go check out the new Mast General Store. It was awesome! There were all sorts of old toys and candy that I had completely forgotten about – including paper dolls! If you’ve read much of my blog, you know that I was crazy about paper dolls when I was a kid. Mast also had wax lips, wax bottles, Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, Pop Rocks, Bottle Caps, chattering teeth, a huge selection of Curious George memorabilia (you’ll love that, George!), candy cigarettes, toy guns, and all sorts of other blasts from the past.

I am meeting Kevin at 4:00 today. We’re going to see Hollywoodland.

I signed up for private swim lessons as a surprise for Brico. He’s a huge fan of the water, and I would love to be able to swim with him. I took my first lesson on Thursday, and afterwards, I just couldn’t keep the secret any longer. I was excited about my progress, which included learning to float on my back and in a vertical position, and staying completely underwater for 10 seconds. Having been terrified of having my head underwater since I was a kid, this was a very big deal for me! So anyway, I blew it. I told Brico. I figured I could use the support, and he has always been very supportive. In retrospect, maybe I should have tried a little harder to keep my secret. Brico has enough to worry about right now.

My second lesson is tomorrow at 2 PM. I hope to be swimming decently with a few more lessons. Wish me luck. It wasn’t easy to convince myself to undertake such a task. I’m going to start visiting the gym pool to practice what I’m learning.

It’s Self Portrait Challenge time again! The theme for September is With Someone. I thought it only fitting that I post a photo of me with my boyfriend for the first week.

Meet fellow blogger Bricotrout. He left his first comment on my blog on September 1, 2005. Within a couple of months, we had become great friends. For months after that, we spent countless hours emailing, talking on the phone, and chatting online. We never seriously discussed meeting until April 2006. We met in May, and things have been great ever since. He is truly a dream come true.

I try to keep this blog from getting too mushy, but for those of you who like mushy, check out this post from my other blog. I’ll let it do the talking.
