He Came, He Saw, He Snored!

I took a much needed break from studying on Saturday evening to see a movie with a nice young man. He and I are both huge fans of the Saw movies, so we chose to watch Saw V. I had read some negative reviews, but we decided to reserve judgment until seeing the movie for ourselves.

I am happy to say that we were both pleasantly surprised. The movie flashed back to the previous four films, filling in some gaps and tying up some loose ends. We both really enjoyed it – except for one very distracting element.

Shortly after the opening credits, we heard snores back behind us! There were only a handful of people in the theater, so it was easy to pick out the culprit. He was sitting all alone on the back row, head tilted back, mouth open, and disturbing the peace of all those around him. The nice young man speculated that the old coot was sleeping off a drunken stupor, but I have a very different theory. I think his old lady tossed him out, and he figured he’d save a few bucks by buying a couple of movie tickets instead of springing for a hotel room!

Despite the fact that the snoring continued through the entire movie, we had a great time. The nice young man and I enjoyed an evening of terror coupled with good company. And well, I’m pretty sure the old coot had his best night’s sleep ever!

Employee of the Month

Every time I turn the TV on, I see Jessica Simpson selling acne treatment cream. Her skin is as pure as the driven snow, and apparently as smooth as a baby’s butt. Do you really think she has ever even had a pimple?

Until recently, I had never even seen any of Jessica’s work other than the Proactiv commercials and about five minutes of The Dukes of Hazzard, as that was all I could tolerate. But a few weeks ago, I saw part of Employee of the Month while I was at the gym. I was pleasantly surprised – not by Jessica’s performance really, but by the sheer humor of the film. I laughed harder than I’ve laughed during a movie in a long time. I wasn’t up for being on the treadmill for two hours, so I rented the movie shortly after that. It was great. In fact, I’ll probably add it to my DVD collection at some point. If you’re looking for a movie that requires little thought but generates lots of laughs, give this one a chance. I think you’ll like it.

Superhero Sunday

I went out with my friend Jack on Sunday night, and I had the most fantastic time! We ate at the Mellow Mushroom and then went to see Iron Man at the new theater downtown. The food was great, and the movie was even better! I must admit that I’ve always found Robert Downey Jr. attractive, and he was really smokin’ as Tony Stark! And man – his suit was awesome. I’d love to have that Iron Man suit! Can you imagine all the cool things you could do? I love most superhero flicks, but Iron Man was definitely one of the better ones I’ve seen. I think I enjoyed it even more than Batman Begins!

The Long Awaited Return of House, MD

Tonight marks the first of four all new episodes of House, MD! I just finished watching Season 3 on DVD recently, so I’m all ready for this new season. Only a few episodes have aired, and I’ll be able to catch up by watching those online.

Season 3 was great. House spent a short period of time in a drug rehabilitation program. Foreman resigned. Chase was fired. And Cameron finally admitted her feelings for Chase! I have no idea what has happened up to this point in Season 4, but I did see Kal Penn, one of my favorite actors, in the previews! Quite interesting – especially considering that John Cho, who starred with Kal Penn in Harold and Kumar, was in an episode of House a while back. Maybe they’ll finally score that medicinal marijuana they were after in the movie!

Movies with Tish

I’ve had a Netflix membership for nearly 3 years now. Considering that I usually watch several movies per week, it’s much cheaper than making multiple visits to Blockbuster. It’s also much easier to get the new releases in a timely fashion.

I have already watched two movies this weekend – Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Marilyn Hotchkiss was fantastic, and I would recommend it to anyone. It’s the story of a man who is deeply depressed over the recent death of his wife. Fate causes him to cross paths with a man who is involved in a tragic auto accident on his way to meet a childhood crush he hasn’t seen in more than 40 years. It’s a story of letting go, and of finding hope again. Keep some tissues handy. I haven’t cried so much since The Notebook. As for Alvin and the Chipmunks, it was a cute movie!

I still have dozens of great movies in my Netflix queue. Now all I need is some home theater furniture and a popcorn machine!

Admiring Michael Peña

I watched Shooter last weekend, which was an awesome movie. And though Mark Wahlberg is definitely a hottie, my attentions were focused on Michael Peña.

I’ve been a fan of Michael’s since he appeared on The Shield in 2005. You may also remember him from his staring roles in Crash and World Trade Center.

Triple Feature Weekend

It sure is great having that certification exam behind me. I’m finally able to watch movies again! I’ve got three on the agenda for this weekend.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Hairspray
White Noise 2

Here are my thoughts on a few of the movies I’ve recently watched.

Eight Below – How could you go wrong with Paul Walker and lots of dogs? This movie was absolutely superb. It’s based on the true story of three Antarctic scientists who are forced to leave their sled dogs behind. The dogs must brave the cruel winter on their own. Unbelievable story of heroism and survival. Keep some tissues handy.
The Simpsons Movie – I watch The Simpsons from time to time, but I’ve never followed the show religiously like everyone else seems to. Still, the movie was good. Not excellent, but good.
Balls of Fury – If you’re looking for a few good laughs and absolutely no need to use your brain, this is a good choice. I enjoyed it.

And now, I leave you with one last thought.

One More Reason to Love Netflix

I’ve been a Netflix member for more than two years now, and I’ve never questioned the decision. If you’re a movie buff like me, Netflix is a dream come true. Unlimited rentals for a small fee each month, no wait on most movies, and no late fees.

Now there’s yet another reason for me to love Netflix. There is a shipping facility right here in Knoxville! Previously, I was assigned to the Duluth, GA facility, so there was a two day turnaround for my movies. With the new facility, I receive my movies the day after they are shipped!

In the Air Tonight

I should really stop watching scary movies at night. I just finished watching The Hitcher and then took my dogs out for a quick walk. It was dark, and the wind was swift. There was something very eerie in the air. And all I could think of was vampires swooping down to get me!
