Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while know just how many medical issues my dogs have faced over the last couple of years. Cruella battled (and beat!) three types of cancer and a near fatal case of peritonitis last year. She is currently being treated for Pituitary Dependent Cushing’s Disease and hypothyroidism. But thanks to God and a great team of doctors, she is doing very well.
Molly was diagnosed with Atypical Cushing’s Disease last year and is currently being treated with melatonin and flaxseed oil. She had experienced chronic ear infections for several years and required repeated doctor visits and multiple medications. No matter what we tried, nothing seemed to help. Last year, the doctors speculated that the problem was linked to a food allergy and suggested that we try a “limited ingredient” dog food. We tried several to no avail. Molly hated them, and every opportunity she got, she was knocking over the garbage can and scavenging for food. A friend of mine has always raved about holistic cat food, so I decided to try an all natural dog food - one with more than just two or three ingredients.
Molly continued to see a dermatologist at the University of Tennessee, trying various medications for her ear trouble. Simultaneously, I switched both dogs to the holistic pet food. Soon afterward, Molly’s ear infection was gone! I’m not sure if it was the medication, the food, or a combination of both, but you cannot imagine how happy I was that she finally had healthy ears!
The dogs continue to eat holistic dog food, and I’ve noticed an improvement in their overall health. They also usually seem happy and playful, and they enjoy mealtime even more than they did before. And looking at the list of ingredients in their food, I can’t say I blame them! I’m almost tempted to try it myself. I pay about $2 per pound, but it’s a small price to pay to keep Molly and Cruella happy and healthy.
