I Must Be Crazy…

As most of you know, I spent the last 5 or 6 months of 2007 studying for my Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification. I took and passed it on December 29th!

I have now decided to pursue my Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification – the most prestigious certification in the industry. I will be studying from now until December, and even taking another 12 week prep course in the fall. The SPHR covers the entire HR Body of Knowledge, as did the PHR. The biggest difference between the two is that the SPHR has a much greater focus on Strategic Management.

Both certifications are broken down into six modules:

  1. Strategic Management
  2. Workforce Planning and Employment
  3. Human Resource Development
  4. Total Rewards
  5. Employee and Labor Relations
  6. Risk Management

Strategic Management made up 12% of my PHR exam, and it will make up 29% of the SPHR. Each of the other modules will make up a lesser percentage of the SPHR than they did on the PHR.

Just like with the PHR, I will have 4 hours to complete 225 questions. If I pass and receive the certification, it will be good for a three year period. Maintaining the certification requires 60 hours of qualified continuing education during each three year certification period.

I put in many, many hours of study time last year, and I’m sure I’ll put in a lot more than that this year. But I am hopeful that the exam will go well and I will be able to add this incredible achievement to my resume in December. Wish me luck!

Wow – you are ambitious! Good for you, though. At least you know what you are getting into and you are a study-hound. You don’t need the luck because you are definitely going to obtain this on your own merit! Let us know when you are going to start studying again so we can keep encouraging you.
