Soon to be Certified in Pet CPR!

I took my annual CPR recertification course on Friday. This marks my 8th year of being certified. Fortunately, I’ve never had to use my skills on a person, but it was just over a year ago that I saved one of my dogs from choking. I’ll admit that being certified in Adult CPR helped me deal with the situation, but I still wasn’t prepared for such an experience. And I hope I never have to do it again.

Anyway, Friday was exactly one year to the day that Cruella choked on a small piece of hot dog. After taking my Adult CPR course, I started thinking about Pet CPR. Johann the Dog has a great Squidoo Lens on Canine CPR, but having a hands on training course would be even better. Johann’s Lens contains a list of Red Cross chapters offering Pet First Aid/CPR classes. I contacted our local chapter and signed up for a class in March. I hope I’ll never have to use the skills I learn, but I want to be prepared just in case.

When I talked to the Red Cross on Friday, there were still 8 spots open in the upcoming class here in Knoxville. If any of you are interested, please call to reserve your spot as early as possible. This class fills quickly. If you do miss it this time around, another class will be offered in May. The fee is only $25, and you even get a book and t-shirt to take home. The class is four hours long and is taught on a Saturday.

I encourage all of you to sign up for CPR classes - Child, Adult, and Pet! You never know when you’ll be in a critical situation that calls for these skills. I hope you’ll be prepared.

Tish! I can’t believe it’s been a year…I have to tell you, you and I have been able to really get the word out about the importance of CPR for your pups.

I’m so glad you were able to help Cruella, and I’m incredibly proud of you for signing up for the class.

Can’t wait to hear all about it!

That’s seriously awesome that you’re taking this course, Tish. Cru really has the best mom around. (And Molly too, though she probably wouldn’t admit it.)

I don’t think I wanna be in a position where I’m the only guy in the room who knows how to perform doggie CPR. And I just know somebody’s gonna have a camera too to mark the occasion and then upload it on Flickr for all the world to see.

I’m happy your dogs are doing well, especially after Cruella’s scare last year. I’m human CPR-certified, but as mom to 2 dogs (and 4 cats), I’m definitely interested in learning pet CPR. I’ll be checking out the links you posted once I’m home. Thanks for the info!

i didn’t know there were classes for pet CPR! :) though i’m sure we probably don’t have them in manila.

my job description forces me to know how to do human BLS (basic life support) and ACLS, but i haven’t had the chance to do either outside the hospital. it was my worst nightmare when i was still a medical student that i’d be walking down the road in my whites and suddenly stumble upon a person needing CPR.

but seriously, it’s great how you’re encouraging people to take classes. :) you never know when you’re going to be able to make a difference in someone’s life - a life and death one.
