I found this spider hanging out between two shrubs in front of my house. It’s about the size of a nickel. Anyone know what it is?

Is that the size of a nickel with its legs included? We have some of those outside, too. We watched one spin its web recently. Pretty amazing, really.
I’m going to have to go in the woods at dusk and photograph some of our local arachnids. We can compare.
We’ve found 2 wolf spiders in the last 2 days- one was just a baby. The other I caught in a jar and tossed off the deck. Gotta get some spider foggers!

um, it’s ugly and creepy - that’s what it is!

Kev - You’ve been watching too many movies.
Geneva - It’s about the size of a nickel with its legs folded up. So a little larger with them outstretched. But I’ve seen lots of these spiders in the shrubs, and many of them are smaller than that one. You should definitely take photos of your spiders for your blog. Just don’t get bitten! Scott might have to use his first aid kit on ya! Oh, and about the wolf spiders - the Orkin man told me that they usually don’t venture too far from their nests. They have nests at the back of my yard, so I guess that’s why not too many of them have shown up in the house or garage. Hopefully you won’t see many more of them either!
Amy - Ha! I love your answer!

It would be a dead spider if it was outside my house!
October 7th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Well, I didn’t know, but according to my Google-fu, it looks like some kind of Yellow Garden Spider (or an Argiope). That’s just a guess based upon the markings! Creepy, but if I’m right, they’re harmless and beneficial because they eat pests.
October 7th, 2007 at 7:29 pm
I seriously don’t know how you sleep at night with all of this creepiness! I am freaked out just reading about it!
October 7th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
I’m with you Sandy. I remember years back when I had a mouse in my bedroom. I could hear it eating through a bag on my floor. I didn’t sleep a wink.

October 8th, 2007 at 9:44 am
That is so wrong. I should not have to look at that first thing on a Monday morning while drinking my coffee and trying not to vomit through my nose.
October 8th, 2007 at 11:47 am
I don’t know what it is….
Hi Tish!
How are you :)?
I would like you to help us passing the penguin:

Thanks!
Cheers

Tish! Eeeww! We seem to have a slight spider problem in the new house as well and every time I see one I think of you having to have an exterminator and I get all paranoid and think we need one too. I am also super paranoid and think I am going to get bit by some new strange breed of spider and go into anaphylactic shock so I could be jumping to conclusions and all … but eeew!! eeew!! Gessh… good luck

Hey Tish,
Sucks to have a spider problem. I’m 6′2″, 230 lbs, and I have a big issue with spiders. My brother in law just got bit by a Brown Recluse a week ago and he is still really sick. Hey, if you think those Wolf Spiders are big, check this out.
That will give you nightmares.
October 10th, 2007 at 9:23 am
That sucks about the spiders. My bro-in-law just got bit by a Brown Recluse and he has been laid out for over a week. If you think Wolf Spiders are big, check this out.
Now that’s the stuff of nightmares. Thankfully Camel Spiders are only in the Middle East.

I am not sure what the spider was in this picture… but I can take a guess at what it is now: dead.
October 13th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
Tiffany - I like your way of thinking!
Steve - Perhaps it is. I left it where it was. I hope I don’t end up regretting that. hehe.
Sandy - It’s amazing what a few sleeping pills can do!
Bush - *LOL* Did you leave it some potato chips?
Flat Coke - I’m with you!
Rolando - I have no idea what it is. Sorry to hear about your bite. You must have an allergy! Stay away from my house for sure!
Andrew - So sorry. I’ll give you something better to look at next Monday morning.
Max - Hey there! Things are going well here. And I passed on the penguin! Thanks!
Miz - Good luck with the spider problem. You might want to put Dr. House on speed dial just in case you run into a new breed of spider!
CG - Sorry to hear about your brother. Those brown recluses are bad news! I hope he gets well soon. And I’m going to click that camel spider link now. I hope I don’t regret it.
Garry - Haha! It should be, but I left it where it was. You should have seen when I tried to take its photo the first time. It jumped and I dropped my camera! I’m afraid to get any closer to it.

id be scared if i saw that big ass thing
April 30th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
That is an Orb Spider, I believe. Is it sort of Brown and Orange with a little yellow. or all brown. Either way it looks like and orb. They are harmless to us, though running into them while on the lawn tractor is certainly icky. They eat lots and lots of mosquitos and other pests. They are good to have around and fun to watch, as long as they stay OUTSIDE!!
May 5th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
That is the cripiets thing i’ve seen
May 6th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
it is an Orb Weaver spider. they come out around dusk and make their webs for the night to catch moths and other insects, then in the morning they will usually roll their web up and leave. then around dusk time they do it all over again. sometimes the same place, sometimes somewhere else. they are not poisonous. some have a tan and black striped legs some have an orange and black striped legs. ive seen some get as big as a half dollar.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:47 am
that is a windowcill spider.not sure on the venom levels though.

I have the same spider in my yard right now. Same marking on it’s back. And when it spreads its legs it’s pretty large.
BTW, whoever wrote “St. Andrew’s Cross” spider….
Those spiders actually design an X into their web (very obvious) and sit with their legs in that shape, too. They have very sharp stripes on their back. AND, unless you’re in Australia, you won’t be seeing one in person.
