Weekly “link love” posts seem to be pretty popular around the blogosphere. Several of my friends, including Mike from Ordinary Folk, do weekly posts linking you to some of the cool things they have found over the previous week. Since I read a lot of blogs and find lots of cool things on them, I am jumping on the bandwagon! Each Sunday, I’ll give a sampling of some of the interesting things I’ve discovered.
Without further ado, here are the first Sunday Samplings.
- Kaliblue blogged about Israel “Bruddah IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole, a Hawaiian musician who passed away 10 years ago at age 38. He became famous outside Hawaii when his album featuring a Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World medley was released in 1993. The song was featured in several films, television shows, and commercials. I must admit that I had never heard of Kamakawiwo’ole, but I watched the video of his famous medley on Kaliblue’s post, and I was touched. This man had an absolutely beautiful voice, and as Kaliblue put it, A Beautiful Spirit.
- Ever wondered where the expression “curiosity killed the cat” came from? Les Jones has the answer. This proverb has a theatre connection dating back to 1598!
- We’re all sick of hearing about the iPhone, but Kiltak has posted something guaranteed to make you laugh. Check out iPhone: The Musical.
- Pownce is a new project by the founder of Digg. It is still in beta form, so it’s by invitation only. Jonathan Phillips wrote a great review called Pownce: Kinda Like Twitter But On Steroids. Take a look to see what all the hype is about. And if you want to give Pownce a try, I have six invites. If you want one, leave a comment below.
- My sister just made some homemade potato chips that are fried in Red Palm Oil. Her family was crazy about them, and if the photo is any indication, I would be too.

Pownce seems to be broken this morning. I was just trying to add Jonathan to my friends list and all I’m getting is a blank page. Eep.

OK–I thought the iPhone thing was fairly lame until about the middle… I’ll admit it. I laughed. I cried. I want one. Fortunately, there’s no AT&T service up here, so I’ll have to wait awhile. Of course, by then, the bugs will be worked out and they’ll be cheaper!

Hey, thanks for the link. I’ll make you up a batch of those chips when you come to visit.

Mike – I hope it’s working for you now!
Os – Funny video indeed! I hope you’ll be able to get an iPhone soon!

The “Over the Rainbow/Beautiful World” medley has long been one of my favorites. Like one of the commentors on the site said, the E.R. episode when Mark Greene died and they played this was almost too much.
One thing that always bothered me about the song was that he jumbled up the “Over the Rainbow” lyrics, so they’re all out of order and don’t always rhyme or make sense. I wonder why? I want to sing this one sometime, and if I do I may not be able to help myself from putting them back in order…

Barry – I used to be a big fan of ER, and I remember bawling my eyes out when Mark died. I didn’t remember that this was the song that was playing – probably because I was too busy crying to actually hear it.
