Poor Molly!

I dropped Molly off at the vet yesterday morning. The plan was to give her anesthesia so that the doctors could get deep into her ears to see how they are healing. They were also going to re-check her liver enzymes and do another urinalysis.

A couple of hours after I dropped her off, I got a call from the vet. They had just checked Molly’s liver values, and they were sky high! Much higher than they were before! Now the liver issue is even more critical than the kidney problems. And yes, the kidney problems are still there too! The urinalysis showed high levels of protein in the urine.

The doctors checked Molly’s ears, and since there was a lot of gunk building up in the right ear again, they re-flushed without anesthesia. They ran some blood tests to gauge her liver function. They also tested for three tickborne diseases and a disease called Leptospirosis, which is transmitted by wild animals. The results for those tests should be coming in within in the next couple of days.

Molly is scheduled to go in for an ultrasound next Tuesday. They will be looking for abnormalities in the kidneys, liver, and gall bladder. In the meantime, she has been put on a supplement to help protect the liver. I was told to stop giving her the steroids, anti-fungal pills, and ear drops for the left ear. And I have to reduce the dosage of the ear drop for the right ear. It turns out that giving her those medications could cause even more damage to the liver. Provided that a diagnosis hasn’t been reached by that time, the doctors will test for Cushing’s Disease in approximately six weeks. They have to wait until all the steroid supplements are long gone from her system.

I am so frustrated and pained to see what Molly is going through. Why does it take so long to arrive at a diagnosis? I did ask the vet if Molly is feeling any pain. She said that she doesn’t think so, but that if the disease continues to progress, she probably will start feeling some pain. Hopefully we’ll have a diagnosis and a cure before that time comes. Yesterday’s bill was $409 and some change! I think I’ve passed the $1,800 mark now. Anybody got a well paying part-time job available?

i wish i had some advice to give you about Leptospirosis but my doc says that the human version i have is quite different than the canine verision and her taking my medicine would be useless.
