Another Post from Motor City

Today was a much better day than yesterday was. I made it to my seminar with the navigational assistance of Bridget. Whew!

I just had dinner in the hotel restaurant. I wasn’t in the mood to get lost again, so I figured my best bet was not to leave the hotel unless absolutely necessary. You know what I love about hotel restaurants? The majority of the people there are eating alone. Now, I do plenty of things alone. I see plays alone all the time, and I don’t have a problem with it. But going to a restaurant alone has always made me uncomfortable. I do it from time to time, but it’s not particularly enjoyable. That being said, the hotel restaurant is a decent option for a single traveler. The menu at this place, however, was a bit lacking for us vegetarians.

Remember the hotel employee from Tennessee? He was working when I checked in last night at 7:00. I saw him again at 7:00 this morning! And as I came out of the restaurant a while ago, there he was again! Does this man live here? Does he ever sleep?

Turns out that the guy moved from Tennessee only five years ago, but judging from his foreign accent (which to a Tennesseean means any accent that is without a southern drawl), he’s originally from somewhere other than the Volunteer State. Anyway, he asked me about my day, and whether I had gotten lost again. He then promised to have a better map for me next time. This guy looks a little like Keanu Reeves. At least he does through beer goggles. Just kidding! I wasn’t drinking beer. It was water - I swear!

I finally got around to watching the first episode of Sucks Less, with Kevin Smith. For those of you who don’t read Kevin’s blog, here’s the scoop. He was offered a job working with MTV and UCLA to produce a weekly 8-minute tv show. The show is actually a credit course for UCLA grad students with various production concentrations. They work with Kevin to produce this show, which offers a hodgepodge of entertainment ideas for those students who aren’t getting laid. Yep, you heard it right! The show was originally to be titled For Those Who Can’t Get Laid, but the name didn’t fly with UCLA. If you’re interested in seeing Episode One, check it out here. And for the story about how this show came to be, read it in Kevin’s own words right here.

I have a couple of meetings here in Detroit tomorrow morning, and then I’ll be getting on the road back to Knoxville. Expect a post (with photos from that most magnificent place!) when I finally get settled back into town. Have a great night!

Ooh, I think I saw you waving at us from across the river! I was totally awestruck when I saw Detroit city from the Canadian (Windsor) side recently. We’re literally just an hour or so away from there. You should have hopped the border and come and enjoyed some Anglo/Canadian hospitality!

I have to agree about eating alone. I’ll go to the movies alone and do most things on my own but when it comes to eating out I get it to go.

you guys are nuts! eating alone is the best! you can slobber, belch, mumble to yourself, slouch, lean back, belch, drool, spill, even belch without offending anyone (except the people at the other tables but hey! you aint dining with them!)
i flew into detroit once and i gotta tell you, it looked like the ugliest most depressing city i had ever seen. i feel for you. i would rather get lost in fiji than detroit.

Wow, sounds like a trip can either be viewed as adventure in hindsight or eek! it is over by the time you get home.
