I wish this weekend could last for a few more days.
On Friday night, I did some shopping. It’s not really very often that I go hit all of my favorite stores, but that’s just what I did. I got some goodies too! More to come on that later…
On Saturday evening, I went to see CBT’s production of All My Sons at the Carousel Theatre. I must say that I have never seen a better play. It was truly heartwrenching, but I encourage everyone to see it.
All My Sons is the story of Joe Keller, a successful businessman who has spent his whole life pursuing the American Dream. During World War II, in order to keep from losing a government contract, he knowingly sold defective cylinder heads to the Army. These defective parts caused planes to crash, killing 21 young pilots. Joe then pinned the blame on his business partner. The play takes place after the war, and Joe’s lies start to catch up with him. All My Sons is truly a tragic tale, but you’ll be a better person for seeing it.
According to a publication put out by Clarence Brown Theatre, “The major theme of All My Sons is Arthur Miller’s belief that people have a wider responsibility to the society in which they live. In this play, Miller asks each of us to look inward and ask ourselves what our responsibility is, both inside and outside our own front yards. And what is the cost, if responsibility is abandoned?”
The issues addressed in this play are just as relevant in 2006 as they were in 1947.
If any of you Knoxvillians are interested in seeing this play, it runs through October 29th. I will probably see it again myself. A word to the wise - bring lots of tissues! And that’s not just for the ladies. I saw more men than women wiping their eyes!
Today has been spent catching up on homework. I procrastinated on some important projects this past week, so now I’m paying for it. I’m almost caught up though!
I hope you have all had a terrific weekend.

Glad you enjoyed the play. It’s one of my favorite Miller’s works. Dare I say that I like it even better than Death of a Salesman.

Ah if only I lived somewhere near civilization. *weeps* Unfortunately, in Hicksville U.S.A. they think the theatre is only “fer citified folk” and probably infectuous. One day I’ll make it outta here and be able to get cultured up. Until then I’ll just live vicariously through you.

TG ~ You’re welcome to come out here and get cultured!
James ~ Awesome! The next play is The Laramie Project. I seem to remember you saying you want to see that sometime! I’ll let you know how it is.
JC ~ Thank you! I hope you did too!
