More Bits and Pieces

  • I was really looking forward to the first play of the season – Born Yesterday – at Clarence Brown Theatre last night. The plays usually begin promptly at 8 PM. Around 8:10, I noticed that the seats in the first three rows were bouncing up and down. The ushers then moved the people seated there, and we continued to wait for the performance. Shortly afterward, an announcement was made. There would be no performance due to “technical difficulties” with the orchestra area underneath the floor. Apparently, the hydraulics were acting up and causing the floor (and seats) to rise. It was an unsafe situation, and we’d have to exchange our tickets for a different performance. As if it wasn’t bad enough that I was all dressed up and dateless, I was now all dressed up, dateless, and going back home. Wish me better luck for next time.
  • I was really disappointed that Denis Leary didn’t take home the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Darn Kiefer Sutherland! Denis is an unbelievable actor, writer, producer, and comedian. He’s also incredibly sexy. Speaking of Denis, the season finale of Rescue Me comes on Tuesday night!
  • Brico and I have officially been together for three months.
  • I’ve been following the Lexington plane crash on Fox News. It appears that the plane went down the wrong runway and had inadequate pavement for a successful takeoff. It’s unsure at this time if the plane made it off the ground at all. 49 fatalities – how tragic. My deepest sympathies go out to all the family members.
  • I don’t know what to think of the case (or lack thereof) against John Mark Karr. He has confessed to killing JonBenet Ramsey, but some of the details he has given don’t add up. His family claims that he was nowhere near Boulder at the time of JonBenet’s death. This man has been obsessed with this case for the last ten years, but that doesn’t make him a killer. Come on and test the DNA already! If it matches, he’s guilty. If it doesn’t, let the guy go! Case closed.
  • Classes officially start tomorrow. I’m enrolled in Social Statistics, Corporate Etiquette, Human Resources Management, and Latin America: Countries and People.
  • Speaking of college classes, I saw an interesting story on Fox News tonight. An economist did a study on whether or not college is really worth it. He assumed that Subject #1 graduated high school and went directly to an elite college, paying a total of $160,000 in tuition. He estimated the student’s earnings (based on average earnings for a college graduate) in the 30 years following his college graduation, minus the $160,000 in tuition, as $1.4 Million. Subject #2 graduated high school and went directly into the work force. He invested $160,000 in conservative mutual funds over a 34 year period. His earnings (based on average earnings for a high school graduate) plus his investment income over the 34 year period equaled $1.6 Million. I have just one question. Where does a high school graduate get $160,000?

Good point about the high school graduate.

The theatre being unsafe sounds a little scary. I think maybe make a mental note never to sit in the first three rows in future, OK?!

Where does a high school graduate get $160,000?

In TN? Selling pot. Same place as the kid going to college gets it. Cash Crop may vary depending on your area.

Did the study take into account that 160K is a doctor or lawyer, making more than the average grad? And that they might also invest in they 30 years?

  3. Red Says:

Sorry about the play, but better to be safe than sorry.
That story on if college is worth it or not is crazy. I didn’t do college and regretting it. Trying to go back and take care of that as a single Mom is a bear.

Why does one assume a college student pays $160,000 in tuition? A decent percentage get full scholarships, and a better percentage get some kind of financial assistance that doesn’t require paying back (partial scholarships, grants, etc). I don’t think I spent $160,000 in my five years at UT (even if it was a number of years ago) and I had student loans most of the way.

Oh, ok, it said “elite”. Well….so? You can get a good job after graduating from a non-”elite” college as well.

Oh, and hail the Keifer. Jack Bauer will save us all. Don’t diss the Jack.

Darn! No play for Tish! Looking forward to your review when you do go again.

  6. Michael Says:

I was torn…I like both Keifer and Denis in their respective shows…both kick all forms of you-know-what…

  7. Kodijack Says:

Yep, there is the hole in that argument. You cannot get in the door without the degree. Degreed people want other degreed people.

Sorry about the play girl but enjoy the next one you attend.

Re. John Mark Karr – the DNA results may not be the end all and be all of this case due to possible contamination of the DNA samples by the Boulder Police Dept. – the story continues.

Re. Is college worth it? NO! But that is my own personal experience talking. What I paid for an education that I didn’t use would have bought me a house. Although then I would be tied to this community and reluctant to sell and move should I actually get that HR position I applied for – wish me luck!

Hope you are well and so sorry I missed your message. Try again when you can. :)

Okay, since they released Karr, I have two suggestions to make him compensate for the time, effort, and money wasted in this whole fiasco…
    1) He has to be let loose in the prison yard for 24 hours during playtime for the real inmates.
    2) He should then have to pay the $$ that it cost US,the taxpayers, to fly his nasty little ass over here in a first class seat from Thailand.

Sorry to hear about the play soulmate, but c’est la vie. You’ll get ‘em next time. I went to school for seven years (gimme a break. I was an adult with a family and a full time job at the time) and it only cost me 40K. I am now in a pretty decent job with Uncle Sam so I think the report is … flawed shall we say? Anyway. Hope you get to see the play soon. Take care.

That sucks about the play – better luck next time!

    Good luck with your classes!

I had the same question about the high school grad. Plus, my college tuition didn’t add up to anywhere near $160,000.

    lecram,
oh tish got some play! it just wasnt the kind she had to be dressed up for!
3 months? *cough sputter gag* its been unforgettable!

I came by way of Barry’s recommendation. I’m a big 24 fan, so I was glad to see Kiefer won. But, I’ve heard good things about Rescue Me, so I think I’ll try to catch up via DVD.
