George has challenged us to recommend three movies that most people may not know about. Why do you like them? Post your answers in your blog, and leave me and George a comment telling us about your post. You can read George’s recommendations here.
Now for my list.
1. The Jacket (2005) - If you like confusing movies like Donnie Darko, Memento, and Mulholland Drive, you’re sure to love The Jacket. It stars Adrien Brody and Kiera Knightly. You’ll also see Kris Kristofferson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and for a brief, fleeting moment, Knoxville native Brad Renfro. The Jacket is the story of Jack Starks, an amnesia-stricken military veteran who finds himself in a mental institution being subjected to bizarre psychological experiments. The treatments thrust him into the year 2007, where he discovers that he died in 1993. I really enjoyed this film because it required a lot of thought to keep up with what was going on. In the end, events were explained, but I was still left with lots of questions. It made for a great conversation with my friends who had also seen the film.
2. Beyond the Sea (2004) - Kevin Spacey co-wrote, directed, produced, starred in, and did his own singing and dancing in this film chronicling the life of Bobby Darin. I have always loved Darin’s music, and I was highly impressed with Spacey’s performances in this film.
3. Antonia’s Line (1995) - This Dutch film won a 1995 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It features English subtitles. It is the story of a woman who builds a new life with her daughter in a small Dutch village after World War II. The film follows Antonia’s line of descendants in a community that thrives with feminism and liberalism. This film does include some strong sexual content and violence. I didn’t expect it to be comedic at all, but I found myself laughing through the entire movie!

They look interesting. I meant to see The Jacket but somehow forgot all about it. I’ll have to put it on my queue.

I love Bobby Darin’s music (okay, I love all three songs of his that I’ve heard) and have been wanting to see Beyond The Sea since it was first announced. Have to keep trying to trick my wife into letting me rent it, because I’m sure she’ll love it too.
