A Tale of Two Turtles

Over the last few years, I’ve saved many a turtle from becoming road kill. Whenever I see them in the road, I always stop and move them well off the road, and always in the direction that the turtle was heading. After all, that turtle had somewhere to go!

I am ashamed to say that yesterday this situation presented itself again, and I didn’t move the turtle. I feel horrible for it! I was on my way to work, driving down Norton Road, and I saw a turtle crossing the road. I looked around for a place to park my car, and there was nothing! I then looked at the clock and realized that if I stopped, I’d be late for work. That turtle was moving pretty fast, and there’s very little traffic that goes down Norton Road in the mornings, so I decided not to stop. The whole way to work I kept thinking about that turtle, and I wondered if I should go back. I didn’t. And I thought about it all day long yesterday! My guilty conscience convinced me to drive down Norton Road after I left work, and thankfully, there was no dead turtle in the road. I breathed a sigh of relief, confessed my sin, and tried to clear my conscience.

This morning, again on Norton Road, I saw a turtle in the road. I wasn’t about to pass on by! I stopped my car in the road and got out to move the turtle. It was a plastic toy turtle! And it was in the same spot as the real one I saw the day before! I looked around, sure I was going to see someone standing in the bushes laughing at me, but I didn’t see a soul. My mind flashed back to the day before – the people I had told about the turtle incident – and I was sure that one of my friends was having a good laugh at my expense. I told only three people what happened, and all of them are swearing their innocence.

So what’s up with today’s turtle incident? There’s no way that can be a coincidence! Is God testing me? If so, I sure hope I passed!
