Beware the Retro Desks!

I’m sure you all remember the desks we were forced to use in elementary school - the chair had an attached wrap-around writing surface. And you can’t forget that super-cool book rack underneath! I always felt confined by those desks, and I was a small child! I can’t imagine how the big kids felt as they tried to squeeze into those desks.

When I attended Walters State Community College, the classrooms were equipped with long tables and chairs that weren’t attached! It was great. We had as much or as little space as we needed. I was in for a real culture shock when I transferred to Carson-Newman College, however. It was like taking a step back in time. The first thing I noticed was the old fashioned “chalk” boards. Walters State had spoiled us with nice dry-erase boards. But even more shocking than that - the retro desks! Granted, not all CNC classrooms are furnished with these antiquities. I have taken a few classes where I had a huge table all to myself - ah, the life! Well, when I entered my English class two nights ago, I was greeted by a sea of retro desks! Guess I’ll have to keep my weight in check this semester. How embarrassing it would be if I could no longer fit into my desk!
